A TEENAGE cancer survivor from Stourton will be whisked away on her dream holiday after months of gruelling treatment.

Imogen Westwood, aged 14, was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma in February last year and had intensive chemotherapy to tackle the tumour in her upper chest.

She also spent nine weeks in the US during the summer, where she received proton treatment to shrink the tumour further.

But there was light at the end of the tunnel for the Summerhill School student as her latest MRI scan showed the treatment had been successful.

Imogen will now have further scans and x-rays every six to eight weeks to check that she is still clear but the initial result came as a huge relief for the Westwood family.

Her father Andrew, of Bridgnorth Road, said: "Almost from the moment we received the clear scan results, Imogen has been transformed back to her old self.

"For all of us it has been like a cloud has been lifted. The last year has been such a challenge, but in a weird way it has strengthened us all and taught us what is important in life."

Imogen added: "It feels fantastic to reach the end of my treatment, and I'm so grateful to all the people who helped me every step of the way.

"Sometimes things were hard to cope with, but with their help I got through."

The youngster is now looking forward to a well-deserved break thanks to Make-A-Wish Foundation UK.

She said: "When Make-a-Wish asked me what I would like to do I knew that it had to involve horses. Because I have an intravenous line fitted I haven't been able to swim for a year, so I wanted to go somewhere warm where I could swim too. They've found a place in Spain where I can ride a horse on the beach - my dream come true. I can't wait to go."

Mr Westwood added: "As a family we haven't had a proper holiday together for some while. To be with her as she takes to horseback, cured and back to being a normal teenage, will be mine and her mum Rachel's dream come true too."

Anyone who would like to follow Imogen's progress can do so here.
