COUNCILLORS have given the go-head for a new housing development to built on the site of The Former Brierley Crystal glass works.
Dudley planners considered proposals from Barratt Homes to build 179 homes on the site, which dates back to 1870 and was used for the manufacture of glass.
The development will provide a mix of apartments and houses, ranging in size from two to five bedrooms, 400 metres from the High Street.
Cllr Geoffrey Southall said: " It's nice to see 74 houses and 105 apartments but it would hvae been nice to have seen those figures reversed."
Cllr Zafar Islam (pictured above) said: "There are a lot of derelict buildings and factories along Moor Street and it certainly needs regeneration to bring modern standards and housing into the area and make a purpose to the waste land."
Cllr Islam added: "The housing will bring more people in to Brierley Hill town centre and the High Street and they will hopefully do their shopping there.
"The High Street needs some economic activity and this would help the morale of traders in the area."
Council officers approved of the application at Dudley Development Control Committee on Monday February 5.
