THE visit of snooker legend Steve Davis to a Stourbridge social club has potted Mary Stevens Hospice a donation.

Stourbridge Institute Social Club invited the former world champion to open its new match room in January this year.

Money was collected through various activities which took place at the exhibition evening, including photo opportunities with Mr Davis, the selling of a signed snooker cue and case and playing a frame against 'the nugget'.

At a presentation held during the weekend, the club donated £612 to the local hospice which included about £100 which was made at a prize raffle held on the night.

Ron Peplow, club chairman, said: “I would like to thank all the members of the club who have contributed and it gives the club great pleasure to help support such a worthwhile local charity.

“I know the money we raised is just a drop in the ocean for the money the charity needs, but every penny counts.

“Steve was such good a good sport and so entertaining. Hopefully we can have another exhibition evening in the future where we could get another legend visiting the club and raise more money for the hospice.”

Ruth Powell, head of fundraising for the hospice, said: “We have been given fantastic support from a great community group.

“The money will be going towards the hospice operating costs as we are dependent on donations. It costs about £700 for one person to receive one day of 24 hour care.”

Mr Peplow said the presentation evening, which sold out and included live entertainment provided by local musicians, was “thoroughly enjoyed by all”.
