VISITORS to Stourbridge's household waste site in Birmingham Street might finish up with more than they bargained.

Site operators have been running a shop on the premises since last September which comprises of items that residents initially intended to throw away for landfill.

Appropriate items brought to the site for tipping are salvaged so they can be reused and put back out on display just inside the entrance gate and sold back to the public - with some of the funds donated back to the Mayor of Dudley's charities.

Cllr Hilary Bills, Dudley's cabinet member for environmental services, said: "The shop has become very popular with people since it was set up.

"When items come to the end of their useful life, it's important to consider alternatives than just throwing them away.

"Most people recognise that recycling is better for the environment than simply burying rubbish in landfill sites and our reuse shop is the perfect way for many of these items to find a new home."
