AS the dust begins to settle on Leicester City’s unlikely Premier League title triumph, one Stourbridge man enjoyed the victory more than most.

The East Midlands club, which was on the verge of relegation last season, defied the 5,000-1 odds and won the league by 10 points, in what some people have called the 'greatest British sporting achievement in history'.

But Stourbridge gambler Karpal Samra had faith in the underdogs and came out £45,000 richer after placing a bet on the team to end the season holding the league trophy.

Mr Samra, who placed a £300 bet on the Foxes when they were at 150-1, decided to back the team after watching them come from behind to beat West Bromwich Albion 3-2 in October 2015.

He said: “During the last six to 10 games in the 2014/15 season Leicester were one of the best teams in the league and they started this season so well, but it wasn’t until the West Brom game that I thought they could do it.

“By that time their odds had dropped from 5,000-1 which they were at the start of the season, but I knew I had to back them.”

The 35-year-old placed £300 worth of ‘special’ bets with six different bookmakers and said he would have placed more if he would have been allowed.

“One of my golden rules is to stick to never betting what I can’t afford to lose,” he said. “But I was so confident in Leicester.

“There were times in the final months of the season where I knew people were cashing out, but I stuck with my gut feeling and it paid off.”

Mr Samra had already spent part of his winnings before Leicester were confirmed as Premier League champions by booking first-class seats with British Airways for a celebratory trip to the USA. He claimed: “I never had any doubt in Leicester.”

He is now planning his next ‘big odds’ move for the 2016/17 league season, adding: "I tell people that they should never chase the money and losses, and there is always another day to see the picture clearly.

“I always achieve one big win a year, but I also have my losses. Last year I put a £200 bet on Newcastle to get relegated, but I suppose I was just a bit too early with that one.”
