A 'JEALOUS' man who left his terrified Stourbridge girlfriend battered and bruised when he brutally attacked her twice in four months has been jailed for four years.

David Churchman had been in a relationship with Yvonne Geddis and after he had been drinking heavily he attacked her when they started talking about their previous partners, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

He then smashed property in her home before launching a sustained attack in which he punched and kicked her.

Rupert Jones, prosecuting, said the 31-year-old then broke a leg off a table and used it to hit her on the head, causing a nasty cut and a black eye.

He told the court Churchman was then bailed but he began constantly calling Miss Geddis and they resumed their relationship.

But he then carried out a second attack on her when he 'flipped' because he believed she had been seeing another man.

This time Churchman grabbed her by the throat until her breathing was impeded and he punched and bit her as he told her he was going to kill her.

Miss Geddis was able to run off and after she screamed for help a police officer chased Churchman only to be assaulted himself when he managed to grab him - Mr Jones said.

Churchman, a sewage worker of no fixed address, admitted two charges of assault causing actual bodily harm, criminal damage and assaulting a police officer.

Judge John Wait jailed him for four years and made him the subject of a five-year restraining order - forbidding him from having any contact with Miss Geddis or going anywhere near her home.

Simon Burch, defending, said it was accepted Churchman had issues with jealousy and his controlling behaviour.

On both occasions he had been drinking and he could not remember striking his former partner with the table leg due to his intoxicated state.
