A STOURBRIDGE renaissance group leader is calling for more people to join her well established historical dance and music collective.

Julia Lowe, principal of Gloriana Living History, is looking for new members who have an interest in the Medieval or Tudor period and want to join a group who transport themselves and their audience back to another moment in time.

The West Midlands group, which was founded in 1978 by a group of enthusiasts, features dancers, musical performers and historians who have played at venues across the country.

These include appearances at Hever Castle, the once-residence of Anne Boleyn, Hatfield House, acquired by Henry VIII, and Coughton Court, a Tudor residence connected to the Gunpowder Plot.

They have also danced at the British Museum as well as making numerous appearances at medieval banquets, charity events, on television and have also taken part in educational visits to schools and colleges.

But the group’s next performance will be in tribute to former king Richard III as they travel to Leicester’s Guild Hall on Monday August 29.

During their trip, the group will also lay a wreath of white roses at the grave of the former king, whose skeleton was found buried under a city centre car park in September 2012.

Julia said: “We would love to welcome new members who want to join a very friendly and open group for people of all ages.

“We’re not just about dancing. Many of our members play early instruments, such as the hurdy-gurdy and crumhorn, while other members enjoy researching into and giving talks on Tudor medicine and warfare.”
