VOLUNTEERS will be joined by a Dudley MP this weekend as they head out and about around Wordsley for a bank holiday clean up.

After complaining about the state of weeds and overgrown grass on kerbsides throughout the borough, Dudley South MP Mike Wood was contacted by several residents angry at the council’s “lack-lustre” response.

So now the MP and a small team of volunteers will spend Saturday (August 27) cleaning up Wordsley High Street, Chapel Street and Queen Street.

Mr Wood said: “We all know budgets are tough to manage at this time, but how on earth can this Council justify road signs being hidden due to overgrown weeds and grass growing out of the pavement.

“We should be proud of Dudley and what it has to offer. Instead, it’s rapidly becoming an eyesore as most roads and streets now have weeds that have overgrown and that in years gone by would have been treated several times a year.”

Councillor Hilary Bills, cabinet member for environment, said: “I think it is a wonderful idea that Mr Wood MP is doing this, as it is because of his party being in power that we’ve had to make cuts to Dudley’s services.

“Dudley has had a massive hit in funding from central Government. We have already lost £50 million and we are looking at £15 million of cuts this year.

“We cannot put the council tax up, but we are still expected to provide all the services we used to when we had much more funding available.”
