HAGLEY was sent back in time to the 80s and returned with £3,000 for the village’s new community centre project.

At a recent quiz and disco event, money was raised for the proposed hub which is set to bring Hagley Parish Council, library services, West Mercia Police and community groups together under one roof.

The successful evening featured a nostalgia fest, including retro drinks and snacks and arcade games, such as the original pong and spaceship games.

It also included the announcement of the Big Hagley Draw winner, with first prize of a £2,000 holiday voucher being drawn out as Pat Dunn, a Hagley villager and author.

Pat said she was “delighted” to have been drawn out for the top prize as she has never won anything before.

The second and third prize winners were given a £400 iPad and £100 Android tablet, with all three prizes being donated courtesy of Worcestershire County Councillor Rachel Jenkins’ divisional fund.

Fran Evans, of Hagley Community Association, who ran the draw, said she was very pleased to have raised so much cash.

She added: “The Big Draw was all about raising awareness about the community centre and the project to rebuild and revitalise it, so that more local people can continue to take part in clubs, fitness activities and host events for many years to come.

“With our fantastic community spirit we believe we can make a building to be proud of.

“It’s estimated that it could cost as much as £2 million to create a larger two-storey building, but this will benefit the community by accommodating a much wider set of community needs as well as the current users.

“Raising awareness and capital for this project is hard work. We are requesting that not only individuals take on the challenge to raise money but also to rally round any events.

“Our events have been well supported and we would like to thank everyone who has given their time and money to the community cause.

“We now need to really crack on with continuing to raise awareness and sourcing funding streams before we finalise the plans to present to the local council planning authority.”
