THE first-ever piece of glass to be made at Wordsley’s new glass museum has 'gone under the hammer' for £300.

Allister Malcolm, resident glassmaker at the new ‘White House Cone – Museum of Glass’ donated the large eye-catching blue bowl created at the museum’s inaugural Heat is On! Exhibition in June and it went under the hammer at Fieldings Auctioneers during its Decades of Design sale on Saturday October 22.

The artwork, the first piece of glass to be created on the old Stuart Crystal factory site since the glassworks closed in 2001, was crafted in front of a large crowd when the £5.5m museum threw open its doors for the first time.

Stourbridge News:

Allister (pictured above) said: “I hope that it comes to be seen as emblematic of what can be achieved by a combination of dedication, vision and, crucially, the tremendous support of the community in helping us create this wonderful new facility for the benefit of all’.

Proceeds from the sale will be donated to the British Glass Foundation – the group behind the new museum project which aims to open the facility in full in mid to late 2017, providing the development plans satisfy Heritage Lottery Fund bosses who have earmarked a £780,000 grant for the internal fit out of the building.
