A BRIERLEY Hill man who crashed into two parked vehicles and rammed a police patrol car during a high speed chase has been jailed for four years.

Andrew Twist was behind the wheel of a £30,000 stolen Mercedes he intended selling to buy drugs during the 15-minute chase, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

And it only came to an end when cops deployed stinger devices but even then the 35-year-old, of Leys Crescent, tried to drive on the rims of the Mercedes' wheels before finally coming to a halt.

Twist hit 90mph in a 40mph zone during the chase over six miles and went through traffic lights on red and the wrong way round traffic islands - David Iles, prosecuting, said.

He told the court the black luxury car was stolen in Stourbridge and a short time later it was spotted by police.

Mr Iles said Twist hit two cars during the chase while other vehicles and a cyclist were forced to take action to avoid being hit by the Mercedes ML250.

He added: "He displayed a deplorable standard of driving - cannoning into a police car and deliberately driving on the rims of the car's wheel and hitting other vehicles."

Six police patrol cars were involved in the pursuit after the Mercedes was spotted on the A41 Black Country route near Wednesbury and it continued towards the West Bromwich and Tividale areas.

Twist, who the court was told had a long list of previous convictions on his criminal record, admitted driving dangerously, without insurance or a licence and handling stolen property.

Stephen Hamblett, defending, said: "He had acquired the Mercedes and he was on his way to sell the vehicle to get drugs."

He said Twist panicked when he realised he had been spotted by police because he knew the car was stolen but he maintained his speed had not been high during much of the pursuit.
