STOURBRIDGE Carnival organisers are hoping the sun will shine brightly on this year’s summer fun day.

The action-packed family event is set to take place in the town centre on Sunday July 2 and theme will be ‘A Celebration’.

Attractions will include a fun fair in Market Street and Talbot Street, a host of stalls and refreshments, performances, displays and classic cars in Lower High Street.

The fun will kick off at 10.30am with the traditional Stourbridge Carnival Princess and Rosebud competition which will see goody bags given to all entrants and prizes awarded to the winners.

Any youngsters wishing to take part can turn up for registration at 10.15am. Three to six-year-olds can enter the Rosebud section, while seven to ten-year-olds can try out for the Princess crown.

The carnival parade will assemble in Lower High Street at 12.40pm and will make its way through the town - winding up in the main arena by the town clock where the new Mayor of Dudley, Councillor Dave Tyler, will officially open the event which will also marks the start of the month-long Black Country Festival.

Carnival organiser David Harcourt said: “There’ll be lots of attractions; we have a packed agenda and lots of entries in the parade. It’s a great family day out and it’s free.”

The theme this year aims to commemorate the carnival’s heydays in the late 1980s when a huge procession with floats galore used to sail through the streets of Stourbridge to the Wollaston Recreation Ground where the event used to be held. It also acknowledges the 100th anniversary of the Lions community fundraising organisation and the 20th birthday of Stourbridge’s award-winning theatre group Side by Side.

Mr Harcourt would also be keen to hear from other groups celebrating a big birthday this year. He can be contacted by emailing harcourt51@aol.com.

Any groups or organisations wishing to have a stall at the event or keen to enter the parade are also asked to email Mr Harcourt at the above address.
