A STOURBRIDGE motorist who deliberately drove his car into a car boot sale traffic marshal has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving.

Stafford Crown Court heard Martin Wiggin, aged 48, attended the event on May 4, 2015, which was being held in fields off Bridgnorth Road, near Wombourne.

Event organisers had arranged designated car parking areas for visitors which had clear signage and marshals instructing motorists to the entry and exit points.

When Wiggin was leaving the sale, he joined a long queue of other vehicles, but rather than wait, he decided to bypass the traffic by leaving the car park through the entry point.

One marshal spotted the defendant's car being driven above the 5mph speed limit and approached the vehicle.

The court was told that Wiggin continued to drive his car which struck the marshal's legs. The marshal then stood in front of the defendant's vehicle in order to stop him from going any further.

However, Wiggin continued to drive forward which resulted in the marshal ending up on the car's bonnet. He was eventually stopped by other marshals who had locked the entry gates preventing him from leaving.

The police were called and Wiggin was arrested.

John Bristow, senior crown prosecutor with West Midlands Crown Prosecution Service, said: “Martin Wiggin's standard of driving fell far below that of the careful and competent driver and it would have been obvious to a careful and competent driver that this was so.

“His behaviour put others at risk at a busy public event, particularly the Marshals who were carrying out a public duty.”

Wiggin was handed a two month suspended prison sentence for 12 months, fined £300 and was disqualified from driving for 18 months until he has passed an extended driving test.
