A QUARTET of Redhill School teachers will be running the Birmingham Marathon this weekend in memory of tragic pupil Pierce Wilkinson.

Head of geography Matt Porter, head of PE Mike Field, PE teacher Esther Allen and Andrew Bishop will take to the streets of the second city on Sunday (October 15) in their bid to raise funds for The Greyhound Trust – a charity very close to Pierce’s heart.

The 13-year-old was tragically murdered in his Norton home earlier this year alongside his mother Tracey.

The Wilkinson family have been keen supporters of the Hall Green Retired Greyhound Trust, homing former racer Mandy since 2015.

Tracey Parbery, chairman of the Hall Green Retired Greyhound Trust, said: “Pierce loved Mandy and she really loved him too.

“The family were great advocates for the trust and showed what wonderful pets greyhounds are.”

Mr Bishop, head of years eight and nine, said: “Pierce was a tremendous young man who we all miss very much.

“He was a wonderful member of our school and The Greyhound Trust was a charity that his family supported, so we have been working closely with them to raise money in memory of both Pierce and his mother Tracey.”

An online fundraising page set up in support of the teachers has already well passed its £500 target, with more than £1,500 already being donated to the trust.

In the run up to the marathon, Redhill pupils will be running a marathon between them in their PE lessons this week to help raise even more money for the charity.

Each student will run a mile within their lessons, with each form then contributing a 26.2 mile run.

Mr Bishop said training is going well for the foursome, with each member completing at least an 18-mile training run.

He added: “Last year I ran the Edinburgh Marathon – slowly – and Mike Field ran the Wolverhampton Marathon.

“But we have each been training over the summer after deciding to run the marathon in Pierce’s memory in April, so we have all been training since then.”
