A COMMUNITY garden and orchard in Brierley Hill is starting to take shape.

The Friends of Marsh Park and Lawyers Field have planted 30 mixed fruit trees – including apples, pears, cherries, plums, crab apples and quince - at Lawyers Field as part of its Growing our Community Together project.

It is a joint project with Brockmoor Primary School, funded by Tesco's Bags of Help scheme.

The cash has been used to build a new planting zone at the Belle Isle school and transform the once bare field.

Working with Dudley Council's parks development officer, Emily Jeavons, the friends group has built and planted five raised beds and erected a compost bin, noticeboard and two benches.

On Thursday, the friends and pupils planted the trees with a little help from the Mayor of Dudley, Councillor Dave Tyler and representatives from Tesco's charity partner Groundwork UK, Brierley Hill law firm Higgs and Sons and Jessup Brothers - who had provide wood for the beds and sponsored trees.

Stourbridge News:

Lorna Morrison, chairman of the friends group, wished to thank everyone who had been involved, adding: "The garden and orchard will provide a resource for the whole community to enjoy, and to get involved with healthy growing and eating.

“We're already seeing folk taking time out to sit in the field and enjoy the flowers we've planted.

"We can't wait for the spring, when we hope for a sea of blossom in what was previously open grassed field.”
