SPORTING memorabilia will be auctioned off in Stourbridge to raise funds for a courageous Sedgley man's alternative cancer treatment.

A signed Sir Henry Cooper boxing glove, a pair of signed Ciaran Clark football boots and a Wales shirt signed by Tyler Roberts are just some of the goods going under the hammer at an auction at The Swan this weekend.

Cash raised will fund treatment for Latham Grant, who was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer, which affects the throat, nasal passages and lymph nodes, in June last year.

After finding out that the chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment success rates for this rare form of head and neck cancer were as low as two per cent for people who already have a strong immune system, Latham, aged 23, decided to look elsewhere.

Intense research led the former Stafford Rangers FC player to a hospital in Mexico, which uses alternative treatments including oxygen therapy and sees patients to switch to an alkaline diet.

He launched an online fundraising bid to help raise money for the treatment and to date, 544 well-wishers have donated £18,658.

Since September last year, Latham has flown out numerous times for treatment and in March, a scan showed that the primary tumour in his nasal passage had shrunk by 56 per cent.

But months later, he was told that the tumour within his lymph nodes had grown and wrapped around a vital artery to his brain.

Surgery was deemed to be "too high risk" and although he was offered conventional treatment, Latham decided to stick with alternative methods.

To help pull in more pounds to fund future treatment, Harvey Pearson, who used to play football with Latham, has organised the fundraiser at the Hagley Road bar.

The event will run from 9pm and 2am on Saturday (December 2) and nine DJs will hit the decks.

Karl Parke, who owns The Swan and has been a friend of Latham’s family for many years, has not only offered the use of the venue free of charge, but is also auctioning off a double platinum disc display of Foo Fighters' Greatest Hits and Wasting Light albums.

A variety of sporting memorabilia will also be up for grabs on the night alongside paintings of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley.

Tickets to the event cost £7 and are available on the door or by visiting billetto.co.uk and typing The Swan into the search box.
