A WOLLASTON schoolgirl swapped her pens for pom-poms and revision for routines in GCSE year – and it has paid off with a World Championship gold medal.
Ridgewood High School pupil Amelia Davies won gold with England at the International Cheer Union (ICU) Cheerleading World Championships in Orlando, Florida.
The 16-year-old was part of the England squad in the ParaCheer Freestyle Pom division, which features disabled and able-bodied cheerleaders working together.
Amelia went one better than in 2017, when the team won silver, as England saw off fierce competition from Wales, Germany and Colombia to take gold.
She is now back home studying for her exams and delighted mum Kate Bennett said: “We are immensely proud of Amelia.
“Working with ParaCheer and the amazing coaches and other athletes has given her many fantastic opportunities and allowed her to develop lots of new skills.”
