Success for Stourbridge swimmers

TALENTED swimmers from Stourbridge's King Edward VI College have proved they're amongst the best in the country, after their medal winning success at the 50th Bazuka English Schools Swimming Association Championships in Sheffield.

The boys medley team comprising Nick Cruchley, aged 18 from Pedmore, Rob Cox, aged 17 from Wombourne, Harry Lord, aged 16 from Norton, and Steve Dawson, aged 17 from Penn, came second in silver medal position - a best-ever achievement for the college.

And the girls freestyle relay team - Louise Williams, aged 18 from Hayley Green, Anna Hodt, aged 17 from Stourbridge, Josie Evans, aged 16 from West Oldbury, and Steph Hackett, aged 16 from Wordsley, finished third in bronze medal position.

Sports teacher Brigitte Lord said after the event on February 2: "This is the first time both boys and girls teams from the college have won medals at the same event, beating nationally renowned teams from Millfield and Kelly College in the process.

"It was a very exciting event with most of our swimmers achieving personal best performances."

The boys freestyle team Jack Watts aged 17 from Sedgley, Michael Edmonds aged 16 from Hayley Green, Harry Lord and Nick Cruchley just missed the bronze medal - finishing fourth in the final, and the girls medley team (the same team as the freestyle) also finished fourth.

Brigitte also praised reserves Jamie Roome (aged 17 from Lye) and Zoe Hunter (aged 16 from Smethwick) for their contribution.
