A RETIRING laboratory technician from The Wordsley School was given a blazing send off when a colleague gave her a fireman’s lift as a surprise leaving treat.
Cynthia Slater, who has worked at the Brierley Hill Road school for the last 35 years - almost since it was built, has always had a soft spot for firemen - so as a special treat colleagues arranged for PE and science teacher Gareth Thomas to don a firefighter’s uniform and give her a send-off to remember.
She later told the News: “It’s my weakness, it was a super surprise.”
Sixty-year-old Cynthia said was feeling “very, very emotional” on her last day (Friday July 18) and added: “It’s a fantastic school - it just keeps getting better; that’s why I’ve stayed for 35 years.”
But the grandmother of five said she was looking forward to getting to grips with her gardening tools - bought for her by members of staff as a leaving gift - and hopes to help out her youngest son with his business.
