PEOPLE planning bonfire night events this weekend are being urged to ensure their homes are left secure.
West Midlands Police say the distraction and noise of fireworks can provide the perfect cover for thieves, who often spend less than ten minutes inside a property.
Officers say simple precautions like leaving a light on and locking doors and windows can prevent raiders from causing a bonfire nightmare.
Chief Inspector Mark Payne, from West Midlands Police, said: “Often, burglars just walk into a home through the front door because people haven’t thought to lock it while they are enjoying themselves in their gardens.”
