Council slammed in VAT cuts row

DUDLEY Council has been slammed for not passing on recession busting cuts in VAT to customers.

The change came into effect on December 1, after Chancellor Alistair Darling announced a two-and-a-half per cent cut in the tax, which he said was “to provide support and protection to families” during the economic downturn.

Dudley Council chiefs chose not to fully pass the change onto users of services including Crystal Leisure Centre in Stourbridge.

The council says the cost of making changes is too high however Stourbridge MP Lynda Waltho believes more should be done to pass the cut on to customers.

Mrs Waltho, said: “The whole point of the reductions was to make things easier during difficult times.

“If business can do that I don’t understand why the council can’t, if they are not able to amend prices it is a ridiculous state of affairs.”

A spokesman for Dudley Council said: “Where goods are advertised exclusive of VAT we will be making the appropriate changes to the price.

“However, where goods and services are advertised including VAT we will not be making the small changes to the cost to customers because of the significant costs in doing that, but the reduced VAT rate will be taken into account when we do our normal annual price review for 2009.”

I'm looking forward to my £21 saving on my Council Tax. But then it's going to cost the council thousands of pounds to make chages to systems and tills to count for the pathetic savings. The 5p per week I'll save on my morning swim - it'll really help towards Christmas.

Typical Dudley MBC!!! I bet it wouldn't be difficult or cost hundreds of pounds to adjust if the 2.5% was added on!!! The economic downturn is global and here in OZ K.Rudd has granted pensioners a one off payment of $1400 for a single $1000 each for a couple and carers $1000 and people with children under 18 get $1000 per child , it is means tested whereby the cut off for income is below $150,000 per year! the handout is to encourage spending and help the econony!!!! so come on Dudley pull your ruddy finger out and stop profiteering off the public- its these sort of reasons we left the UK and are happy not to have to tolerate Dudley MBC anymore!!!

Since you've left the UK I suggest you keep your thoughts to yourself. Leave DMBC out of it - they didn't ask for the VAT reduction. However, I'd prefer the lump sum that you suggest. But most people would just waste it on beer and fags.

Sorry The Trapist I shall do just that!!!! and reflect on my thoughts of the generous british government and how my old countrymen come to terms with a 2.5% saving denied them by their ever caring DMBC, (which I guess are making a huge killing by not passing it on) whilst I sit on the beach cotemplating my windfall with a beer and a barbie(no ciggies gave up years ago)!
