A STOURBRIDGE pub are celebrating after playing a part to gather 172 people called George together on St George’s Day as part of a charity fundraiser.

The Glassworks, in Audnam, Amblecote, hosted a family fun day on Saturday (April 23) to mark the country’s patron saint’s day, with entertainment, fun and games for guests of all ages.

As part of the celebrations, the pub – which is part of the Generous George nationwide chain – aimed to set a record for the largest gathering of Georges, Georginas, Georgies, Georgias and Mr, Mrs, Miss and Master Georges on one day.

Alan Kipps, manager, said: “We had a fantastic day. We’d had a lot of interest and it was great to see our regular customers spread the word and welcome new faces to join us.

“We rewarded all Georges who joined us on the day to help us set the record with a complimentary drink or ice cream, and we were delighted to welcome dozens of Georges to the pub – playing our part in setting a record of 172 across all 13 sites.”

The pub also used the event to continue its fundraising to support local causes. It already donates a penny from every meal sold to Dudley Stroke Association, Promise Dreams and Friends of Alfie Johnson, and a number of the events held on Saturday helped bolster funds.

Alan added: “We’re really pleased with the success of our fun event and it’s something we’ll definitely look to repeat.

“Our customers really got into the spirit of the day and everyone had a lot of fun. We’d like to thank everyone who came along and helped make it such a hit.”
