A BELBROUGHTON nursery owner raised £5,250 for charity by shaving her head.

Jo Hill, of Brookfield Nurseries, braved the clippers in aid of Cancer Research UK.

She said losing her locks was a big deal for her but added:”I got to choose, for many women this is a devastating side effect of their treatment and I hope my fundraising helps in some small way to prevent more people from being affected by cancer.”

The head shave was the main attraction at the fun day held at the Quantry Lane nursery on Saturday July 27, which also included a cake and drinks stall, tombola and raffle.

But disaster struck when the stylist sent to shave off Miss Hill's hair by Theo Georgio - the official stylist for this year’s V Festival, got lost en route.

Luckily, mobile hairdresser Jo Brannigan stepped in to save the day.

Miss Hill said 100 people showed up to support her but the day was tinged with sadness as she remembered friends she had lost to cancer and supported those currently battling the disease.

She said: “It was quite emotional as there were so many people with us on the day who are currently battling cancer but I tried to laugh as much as possible.”
