THOUSANDS of people are expected to flock to Belbroughton to see popstar-themed scarecrows littering the picturesque village this weekend.

The 14th annual Scarecrow Weekend, which aims to give visitors something to crow about, is set to take place this Saturday (September 24) and Sunday (September 25) - with events and activities running from 11am to 5pm on both days.

Those taking a stroll around the north Worcestershire village can expect to see wurzel versions of music icons although exactly which famous faces will be replicated in straw this year remains a closely-guarded secret.

As well as an array of imaginative straw-stuffed creations lining the streets, adorning gardens and hanging off lamp posts - the popular two-day event will also include children’s inflatables, a steam train, farmers’ market, craft fair, birds of prey, dance performances, a penalty shoot out, classic cars, farm animals, archery, champagne and beer tents.

There will also be a balloon race, bell ringing demonstrations, a flower festival in Holy Trinity Church, art displays, Blakedown Scout Group, refreshments and a host of stalls.

Event spokesman Scott MacDonald said: “Mindful of the tough economic times, the scarecrow committee has devised a format whereby visitors can come to Belbroughton, park for free in designated car parks and follow the scarecrow trail around the village to see the usual array of original and humorous displays made by the residents.

“If people also wish to visit the event areas they can do so by paying a very reasonable entry fee and enjoy a range of stalls, activities and entertaining displays.”

Admission is £3 for adult visitors, £2 for OAPs, £1 for youngsters aged five to 14 and £6 for a family ticket for two adults and up to three children. Parking is free this year.

Money raised from the event will be donated to village charities and causes including Belbroughton Primary School, Holy Trinity Church and Belbroughton Recreation Centre.
