Major Ron Foster, a member of the expedition to Borneo’s Death Valley, was the speaker at the June meeting.

Along with Lt Col Robert Neill and eight other soldiers, their task was to navigate the previously unmapped depths of Low’s Gully in Borneo.

It was a story of great courage and endurance culminating, fortunately, in the rescue of all concerned. It was a fascinating talk illustrated throughout with wonderful pictures, which were reminiscent of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World.

Members had enjoyed a pleasant afternoon at the Chateau Impney including a tour and history of the hotel followed by afternoon tea.

Another teatime treat – a strawberry tea – is planned for Thursday, June 27 at Jan Cook’s home.

Seats for the proposed trip to Weston on Tuesday, August 27 are still available.

The Annual Council Meeting and a Christmas trip to Chatsworth were highlighted for later in the year.

The meeting concluded with a quiz, devised by Jeanette, based on anagrams of country names. It was quite difficult and the winning team had the pleasure of knowing that there was a significant margin between first and second.
