BRIERLEY Hill was the place to be for the region’s fostered and adopted children as their achievements were celebrated at an annual awards ceremony.

The Copthorne Hotel played host as children’s charity Barnardo’s marked the efforts of local children and young people over the past year.

Actress Martha Howe-Douglas, who appeared in Horrible Histories and more recently Doctor Foster, presented certificates to the children, while the event was followed by karaoke and a disco, as well as the opportunity for youngsters to meet Santa.

Marcia Briscoe, Barnardo’s operations manager, said: “This was the fourth year that we’ve arranged a celebration for all of the families who have been supported by our service.

“It was attended by almost 150 carers, children and staff who all enjoyed a lovely afternoon which brought people together and encouraged them to share their experiences.

“Awards are presented to every fostered and adopted child, and the sons and daughters of the families who care for them.

“Parents and carers nominate each child for a special award. This could be for doing well at school, excelling at sport or taking part in other activities.

“We were particularly pleased to welcome Martha Howe-Douglas who presented the certificates and praised the children for their individual achievements, and are sincerely grateful to the Copthorne Hotel for generously providing the venue free of charge.”

Martha, who is also known for roles in daytime soap Doctors and Sky1’s hit comedy Yonderland, said: “I was delighted to attend such a fun awards ceremony and a celebration of Barnardo’s support for fostered and adopted children.”
