THE contribution older people make to society is set to be celebrated at an event in Brierley Hill.

Older People’s Day, taking place on Saturday October 1, is an annual celebration of the role older people play in making families stronger and communities richer.

As part of a national campaign, people across the country are encouraged to hold an event or do something special to truly celebrate those in their later years.

Age Alliance, an informal partnership of older people and organisations who working to improve the quality of later life in Dudley, is holding a celebration event on Thursday, September 29, at Brierley Hill Methodist Church.

People of all ages are being invited to come along and celebrate with lunch, reminiscence sessions, crafts and relaxation.

Councillor Rachel Harris, cabinet member for health, said: “The role older people play in our society is invaluable.

“Having worked hard in their careers, raising families, contributing to their local communities and ultimately raising a new generation, older people have skills and experiences which are still of use and interest today.

“Older People’s Day allows us to celebrate the role older people have played and continue to play in our society and I hope will help us to remember and be grateful for their contribution.

“This event is a way of saying thank you and ensuring older people still feel acknowledged, appreciated and part of their communities.”

The free event will take place at the Bank Street church from 10.30am until 2.30pm.
