A BRIERLEY Hill road worker who tried to entice four scared schoolgirls in the Dudley area into his car for sex is facing a lengthy spell behind bars.

Shawn Jones approached the girls - aged 12, 13 and 14 - and after paying them compliments and blowing kisses he asked them to get into his BMW, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

The actions of the 45-year-old father-of-three left the girls frightened and upset but they were able to lead police to his Brockmoor home, the court was told.

Two of the girls in the Kates Hill and Cradley area were able to give their parents part of the registration number of Jones' vehicle; and the other two girls who were in a car parked by KFC at Merry Hill shopping centre managed to photograph the registration on a mobile phone.

Jones, of Norwood Road, had denied four charges of attempting to abduct a girl under 16 years of age with the intention of committing a sexual offence.

But the six man-six woman jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts on all four charges.

The panel had retired to consider the evidence for just three hours at the end of his four-day trial.

Judge John Wait remanded Jones in custody for the preparation of a pre-sentence report and said he expected the case to be finalised at the end of November.

He said they were serious offences and Jones had to be assessed to see if he posed a danger in the future.

He ordered Jones to immediately sign the Sex Offenders Register and said: “The risks will have to be assessed before sentence can be determined.”

Simon Phillips, prosecuting, told the court they would also be seeking a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for Jones.

He told the trial Jones had a sexual interest in the girls and that was proved by the comments he made when they were approached.

He was seeking, said Mr Phillips, to take them away and detain them so he could commit some sexual offence. He told the court: “At the very least he wanted to abduct them for an unknown purpose."

In evidence to the jury, Jones maintained he had not been in the area when the first two girls were approached but he did admit attending the KFC fast food restaurant.

He said the two girls had been looking at him and giggling and he had simply said "what?" before leaving the scene.

But in evidence the one girl said she feared she was going to be raped by Jones while another was visibly shaken when she reported to her mother what had happened.
