A CHADDESLEY Corbett sculptor has brought Queen Elizabeth I back to the grounds of a Gloucestershire castle.

Katie Green co-created the sculpture for Sudeley Castle’s current owner Lady Ashcombe to mark the historical royal visit to the stately home.

Ms Green and metal sculptor David Freedman were commissioned to design the piece which has a metal frame around a tree, covered in mosaics and topiary.

Mr Freedman created the two-part frame in his mill in Nantwich, in Chesire, before Ms Green covered the crown, orb and sceptre, and bodice trim in tiny mosaic tiles.

The 56-year-old said: “The piece was very much Lady Ashcombe’s dream. There is quite a lot of gold but the black grout softens it.

“And she’s got little glittery shoes peeking out from the bottom of her skirt.

“When I was working on it it looked quite eerie at first but it will be wonderful with all the greenery growing through it.”

Former children’s wear fashion designer, Ms Green has been working with mosaics for 15 years, specialising in her glass-on-glass outdoor pieces.

She added: “Sudeley Castle is quite a setting. When I've made something that looks part of its surroundings it’s the best feeling in the world.”

The sculpture will be on permanent display at the castle. For more details visit ktgreenmosaics.com
