A HAGLEY art and design student has been rewarded for creating a new logo for the Friends of St John’s Church group.

Haybridge High School and Sixth Form pupil Annabel Hoare received a £100 cheque for her new logo, which was submitted as part of a recent competition.

Year 11 student Annabel, who was one of the sixteen youngsters from the school’s art department to put forward a design, said: “It just took me an evening over half term to design the logo.”

Richard Scarth, group trustee, who presented the prize to Annabel, said the standard of the entries was “very high”, with all of the students who took part being given a £10 voucher.

The friends group has spent more than £300,000 since its creation in the late 1970’s on the fabric and maintenance in the tradition of the church after a risk the church would close without the support.

Group members recently decided to be a little more proactive in publicising events at the church, and one of those was to approach the art department at Haybridge to offer of a prize to a student for the best new logo design.

Jim Higgs, one of the judges and the only remaining original trustee, said: “What a response. The choice of the winner was so difficult.

“We must congratulate the students and Zoe Earles, head of art and design, for their help in this project.”

One of the next social events at the church is the 12th Night Party to close the Christmas season, on the evening of Friday, January 6, at 7.30 pm.

The night will feature readings, anecdotes and music, plus a piece from Tony Battersby, the church administrator, which will reflect on the lighter side of life.
