THOUSANDS of people from across the Midlands descended on Hagley for the annual Albrighton and Woodland Boxing Day Hunt.

The traditional hunt, which took place around the 350 acres of Hagley Hall and Park, saw about 65 riders saddle up.

Julian Hill, joint secretary of the organisation, said he was thrilled with how the day went.

“It was great to see so many out lining the course,” he said. “We had about 60 to 65 riders out and about 1,000 people watching, so it is great to see the continued support we get each Boxing Day.

"We are a proper traditional event now. I spoke to one lady who said she has been coming out every Boxing Day since the 40s, and one gentleman who was in his 70s said he’s been coming ever since he could remember!”

Fox hunting has been banned since 2004, so now the hunters’ hounds follow fox scented trails which are marked around the grounds.

Julian said the ban has had a positive effect on the numbers of people who attend the Boxing Day hunt.

He added: “You would think it would have decreased our numbers, but it has just made more people, especially youngsters, interested in what we do.

“It’s not just about hunting, but about getting young people into riding. Getting them out ‘cross-country’ is the best way to teach a child how to ride as the focus is much more on balance.”

Before the off, the riders posed in front of Hagley Hall, and our photographer was there to capture the hunters, the hounds and the crowds.
