SCHOOLS in Stourbridge delved into the world of literature during this year’s World Book Day.

The day was marked with various activities including pupils dressing up as their favourite book characters and visits from authors.

An internationally recognised event, World Book Day is the biggest global celebration of authors, illustrators, books and reading, taking place in more than 100 countries across the globe yesterday.

At Crestwood School in Kingswinford, students were treated to a visit from East Yorkshire author Natalie Yates.

Natalie’s latest book Michiko and the Match Girls features a Japanese girl who travels back in time to London in 1888.

The story is based on the historical events of The Match Girls strike, Annie Besant, Salvation Army and Phossy Jaw.

Throughout her time at the school Natalie gave presentations to the pupils, held creative writing workshops and also took part in a lunchtime book signing.

Her next novel, Michiko Heads South, will be hitting book shelves soon.

Pupils at Withymoor Primary School, in Brierley Hill, also took part in World Book Day by coming into school dressed in their pyjamas.

Their school hall was turned into a giant bedroom, while pupils also became 'book detectives' and had to find clues to win prizes.

Rebecca Fellows, Withymoor’s English co-ordinator, said: “We take part in World Book Day each year to raise the profile of reading in our school.

“The day leaves great memories for the children, something they will remember throughout their school lives.”
