PUPILS at a Kingswinford Primary School have recently been learning about children’s rights as part of their bid for a UNICEF award.

Dingle Community Primary School is inviting parents and dignitaries into the school later on Friday, May 22, so students can present what they have learnt.

Ken Hughes, deputy headteacher, said: “Currently at the school we are working towards achieving the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA).

“The award is based on principles of equality, dignity, respect, non- discrimination and participation.”

The aim of the award is to put the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child at the heart of a school’s ethos and culture.

To receive the award, the primary school must demonstrate that children's rights are learned, taught, practised, respected and promoted.

On the event day, pupils from each class will present a specific right to parents, Mike Wood MP for Dudley South, Wordsley Councillor Derrick Hemingsley and Trish Brittain, Dudley Council's acting assistant director of children's services and campaigner for the Rights Respecting School Award.
