A 33-YEAR-OLD man arrested in Kingswinford has admitted the brutal murder of a popular Birmingham father.

Stuart Millership had been set to stand trial for killing 50-year-old Baljit Singh this week.

However, he dramatically changed his plea today (Wednesday) after long discussions with his legal representatives.

In a statement read to Wolverhampton Crown Court Millership expressed his sorrow for the death of Mr Singh.

Mr Rex Tedd QC, defending, read the statement, and said: “I am truly sorry for the death of Baljit Singh and the anguish this has caused his family particularly his wife and son.

“I wish to apologise for my part in this offence and for my earlier failure to tell the truth.”

The body of Mr Singh, who lived in Meadow Road, Harborne, was found in the basement of a house in Beeches Road, Rowley Regis, on New Year’s Day.

He had been missing since December 23 when he left his home to collect a birthday cake for his son.

Millership, of Beeches Road, was arrested by police officers in the Kingswinford area on New Year’s Eve.

A post mortem later revealed Mr Singh died as a result of head injuries and a knife wound to his neck.

Mr Tedd told the court Millership was admitting the murder charge on a basis which could be disputed by the crown.

He said it was possible a Newton hearing would have to be held to determine the issue.

That hearing, if necessary, is set to be held in front of Judge John Warner over two days next week.

Mr Tedd said he would not be putting a copy of the basis in the hands of the court because it was still under consideration by the prosecution.

Robert Price, prosecuting, said he needed time to respond to the document and agreed it could result in a Newton hearing.

The judge then formally discharged the four-man eight-woman jury who had been sworn in for the murder trial and Millership who wore a white open neck shirt and black trousers, was further remanded in custody.

The police and members of the family of Mr Singh said afterwards they would not be making a comment at this stage.
