WOMEN aged 50 or more are being invited to discover the health benefits of cycling in a ten-mile ride along the lanes of South Staffordshire on Tuesday (October 20) - starting at a famed Kingswinford garden centre.

Age UK Dudley's Get Cycling for 50 Plus project, launched in 2010 to encourage an enjoyment of the great outdoors, has organised the event in tribute to legendary super-pedaller Billie Fleming.

Londoner Billie, who died last year aged 100, undertook the challenge of cycling every day for a year in 1938, notching up 29,604 miles, succeeding in her aim of encouraging more women to start riding.

This altogether gentler ride starts at Ashwood Nurseries in Lower Ashwood Lane, Kingswinford, at 10am, and will wind towards Halfpenny Green Vineyard and back.

There will be ample opportunities for refreshment stops along the route.

A maximum of 16 cyclists will be allowed to join in, with participants each asked for a donation of £1.50.
