A KINGSWINFORD firefighter is set to take on one of Europe's toughest marathons for a borough cancer support centre.

Martin Davies, a member of Green Watch at Dudley's Burton Road station, will compete in the Mont Blanc Marathon on Sunday, June 26.

The 56-year-old has decided to use his mountain marathon challenge to raise funds for White House Cancer Support, where he worked as a volunteer driver for three years, after members of his family received support from the group following diagnosis for cancer.

He said: "It's a tough call as it not only covers the usual 26 miles, but it's a vertical challenge and the climbing and descent are incredibly punishing.

"This will be third time I've done the Mont Blanc Marathon. The first year the weather was so bad I couldn't see a hand in front of me, and last year it was so hot I failed to make the final mile within the time limit, so this year I'm hoping it will be great conditions and an easier climb."

Currently training four times a week in Clent, Wrekin and Wales, Martin is no stranger to marathons, with his past conquests including the London Marathon, Iron Man Challenge, various triathlons and the Race Through The Desert.

He added: "I'll have the advantage of knowing the route, but it's a great all-round event and a wonderful weekend, and as long as I finish within the nine-hour overall cut off time and raise funds for WHCS I'll be happy."

Caroline Webb, manager of WHCS, said: "Martin is training incredibly hard for the Mont Blanc Marathon. It's a gruelling task and we're very appreciative that he is raising funds for us and wish him well in his challenge."
