DESPITE the downpours - Kingswinford residents enjoyed a fun-packed family afternoon to mark The Queen's 90th birthday.

The High Acres Community Association laid on the Her Royal High Acres event on Saturday June 11 after scooping a grant of around £1,500 from Dudley Council's community forum for Kingswinford, Wall Heath and Wordsley to hold the celebratory bash to commemorate Her Majesty's milestone birthday.

The event - the first of its kind organised by the new community association - included stalls, mascots, live music, a bucking bronco, bouncy castle, refreshments and a foam machine.

Dudley South MP Mike Wood was among the guests - and he even won the tombola.

The MP said: "It was great to see the local High Acres community coming together to celebrate the Queens 90th birthday and at the same time raise much-needed funds for their individual causes.

"I hope this is an annual event and I look forward to being here next year - hopefully with much better weather.

"However, despite the rain and overcast weather people were not put off from having a good time."

Councillor Paul Brothwood, chairman of the association, said: “The numbers far exceeded our expectations and the six months of work to make this happen was well worth it.

"I would like to say a massive thank you to all the committee members and community. This was our first event but will not be our last."

Money raised from the event will be donated to Dudley's White House Cancer Support charity and Kingswinford High Acres Woodcraft Folk group.

Wordsley councillor Kerry Lewis said the association would get to work to start planning another community event shortly.
