A MAN miraculously survived after crashing his car through a lamppost and a tree in Kingswinford this morning (Thursday, August 11).

Emergency services were called to the crash on Stream Road just before 5.30am after a 999 call from a nearby resident who had heard a “large bang”.

They initially thought the worst when seeing the Subaru completely crumpled, but found the driver – who was trapped in the car – still conscious and breathing.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “The driver was trapped in the car which had overturned, but at about 6am he was able to get out of the car before going to hospital.

“Stream Road is currently closed between Bromley Lane and Auckland Road as there is a lot of petrol on the road and the lamppost and trees are badly damaged.”

A diversion is taking traffic from Stream Road along Bromley Lane, Rangeways Road, Auckland Road and vice versa.

An officer at the scene this morning said the man, who is believed to be in his 40s, was lucky to be alive as the crash was so severe.

West Midlands Ambulance Service was on scene within six minutes of the 999 call and was backed up by two ambulances, a paramedic area support officer and the MERIT team, before taking the man to Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s major trauma centre where he remains in a critical condition.

An ambulance service spokesman said: “On arrival, crews found a blue car on its roof with considerable damage.

“There was a single occupant in the car.  The man was trapped for about 30 minutes while firefighters worked with ambulance staff to free him.

“After being immobilised, he was given a full trauma assessment before being taken to the major trauma centre at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham with chest and back pain.”

Police are now appealing for a key witness to come forward following the crash.

Sergeant Paul Hughes from the regional collision investigation unit, said: "I urgently want to trace the driver of a silver saloon style car that was overtaken by a small red sports car and a blue Subaru just before the crash.

“I also want to appeal to the driver of the small red sports car that was travelling with the Subaru, or anyone who knows the driver, to do the right thing and get in touch.”

Anyone with information is urged to call Sgt Paul Hughes on 101, or alternatively contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
