KINGSWINFORD Air Cadets have been left devastated after their new mini bus was stolen.

The 2488 (Kingswinford) Squadron had only just spent their £15,000 savings, gathered over many years of fundraising activities, on a replacement minibus to travel and take part in parades, expeditions and visits after their old transport failed its MOT.

But overnight between Thursday July 28 and Friday July 29 the Ford Transit 17-seater bus (registration number ND12 ZDV) was taken from their secure compound - just three weeks after they took delivery of it.

Thieves reportedly cut the locks at the squadron's base behind Standhills Road Medical Centre, Kingswinford, and drive the bus away some time between 10.30pm on the Thursday night and 6am the following day.

As a result of the theft the squadron may be forced to cancel activities until further funds are raised to buy another vehicle - as the Air Training Corps is not publicly funded and relies on its own fundraising efforts to enable cadets to take part in DofE camps, expeditions, visits to MOD bases, flying, kayaking, representing the Squadron or region at football, netball, rugby, athletics or other sports or working towards vocational qualifications.

Mark Manning, chairman of Kingswinford 2488 Committee, said: “To have our new minibus stolen is extremely upsetting and it is made worse when you consider the hard work and length of time spent fundraising by the squadron cadets and the leadership team.

"Following the demise of our old minibus it was still a big decision to spend such a large sum of money on this newer vehicle, but to ensure the squadron can support the many activities which it encourages the cadets to participate in and in particular to enable the squadron band to get to and lead Remembrance Day parades, open fetes and carnivals.

"Having a minibus is an absolute necessity.

"We now have to replace the vehicle, improve security and replace items which were inside the minibus.

"If any individual or business can support us I would welcome a telephone call or an email."

The police have been informed and the squadron is now appealing for information from residents who may have seen any activity around their HQ at the time of the theft.

Anyone with information can call Crimestoppers (anonymously) on 0800 555111.
