TRAVELLERS camped in a Wordsley park have reportedly moved onto fields in Cot Lane, Kingswinford.

Caravans started moving off King George V Park this afternoon – after a court eviction order was issued today (Thursday).

But reports of travellers moving onto fields in Cot Lane have been coming in.

Wordsley councillor Paul Brothwood, who had reportedly maintained a presence in King George V Park throughout the day, said: “This can’t keep continuing.”

He said he’ll be calling for an urgent meeting with Dudley Council’s chief executive Sarah Norman – adding: “We need a borough wide strategy – and the Police and Crime Commissioner needs to step in and send a strong message and say they can’t keep doing this.”

Dudley Council applied for a borough wide possession order earlier in the month to help tackle the problem of travellers moving from site to site across Dudley.

But the court bid was rejected – leaving council officials little option but to continue to apply for separate court orders every time the group moves to a new patch of land.

Section 61 powers do, however, in some circumstances, allow police to instantly evict illegal camps but West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner for the West Midlands, David Jamieson, said they are not the "be-all-and-end-all" and he was reluctant for a Section 61 order to be issued when he was contacted by the News regarding the travellers in Withymoor.

However, last Friday police did step in and order a group camped on fields near Sainsbury's Amblecote to move off the site.
