Kingswinford Ladies Social Circle

The ladies met on July 6 at The Royal British Legion, Kingswinford.

Chairman, Sheila Evans welcomed everyone including the speaker, Ned Williams a well-known personality in the area.

Business matters were read, approved and signed. Details of the trip on September 28, were finalised.

A reminder that the next meeting will be the Harvest Supper on September 7

and members are to bring cutlery and also produce to be sold at the auction. The ladies were asked if they wished the proceeds of the auction to go to a special charity but nothing was decided. This will be discussed at the committee meeting on July 20.

The speaker, labelled his talk “A foreigner’s view of the Black Country” he being the foreigner. Ned came from London to become a student at Dudley Teacher Training College. Here he embraced and developed his love of the area by travelling by bus where he discovered strangers actually talked to each other, unknown in London. He travelled around on his motor bike and realized each small town or village had its own little groups. He worked for 30years as a lecturer and helped to form The Black Country Society in1967.Over the years he has written many books about local towns, cinemas, chapels, Pat Collin’s Circus to name a few. He illustrated his talk with a variety of pictures, to the delight of a Black Country audience.

Josie Smith, also a foreigner from Yorkshire gave the vote of thanks for an interesting and enlightening talk.

Two ladies won raffle prizes.

The harvest supper will begin at 7.45pm and is for members only.
