A TRIPLE Olympic medallist inspired potential sporting stars of the future when he hosted an assembly at a primary school after officially opening Kingswinford’s new Aldi store.

Team GB gold medal winner Matt Langridge hosted a morning assembly at St Mary’s CE Primary School after cutting the ribbon at the new store in Dudley Road last Thursday.

Children at the school, which is a stone’s throw away from the new supermarket, were lucky enough to meet the Olympian, try on his medals and quiz him about what life is like for a rowing hero.

The visit was part of Aldi’s partnership with Team GB and the supermarket’s commitment to inspiring 1.2 million schoolchildren to learn about the benefits of cooking fresh, healthy food.

Matt said: “I really enjoyed helping Aldi open its new Kingswinford store this morning. Aldi’s partnership with Team GB has been fantastic for Britain’s athletes, so I’m pleased to be able to give back to the supermarket in this way. All the shoppers looked so excited to look around, and the queue just kept getting bigger and bigger.

“I made my way to St Mary’s in time to host its morning assembly. The boys and girls seemed to really enjoy finding out all about my career, the importance of a healthy diet and trying on my medals. There were many people who motivated me to follow my dreams in sport and I hope I might have inspired a few of the children.”

Aldi store manager, James Green, added: “Our opening morning was a real success and I am sure the primary school children enjoyed meeting Matt as much as we did. What could get children more interested in sport and healthy eating than an Olympian?”

The new food store, which comprises 1,350 square metres of retail space and 105 car parking spaces, has seen 35 new jobs created and posts are still available for store apprentices and a deputy store manager.
