STOURBRIDGE folk are being asked to support World Cancer Day by becoming blood donors.

A series of blood donation sessions will be taking place throughout the region during February organised through NHS Blood and Transplant.

Karen Healy, senior marketing co-ordinator, said: "Many people know blood is often used in accident and emergency situations, but more than 60 per cent of blood is used for non surgical treatment, including cancers and other blood disorders.

"Every blood donation is vital and I would encourage both new and returning donors to make a date and roll up their sleeve.

"Giving blood should take around an hour from the time of appointment to completing the donation.

"I would urge everyone to make time and give blood. You never know whose life you could save."

Blood donor sessions will take place on Thursday February 5 in Stourbridge at the Church of Latter Day Saints in Bagley Street, Stambermill, from 1pm to 3.30pm and 4.30pm to 6.30pm.

On Saturday February 7, sessions switch to Thorns Community College in Stockwell Avenue, Quarry Bank, from 10.15am to 2.15pm.

Further sessions are scheduled on Friday February 20 at Kinver Community Centre from 2pm to 4pm and 5pm to 7.15pm; and on Friday February 23 at Dingle Community Centre, Madeley Road, Kingswinford, from 2pm to 3.30pm and from 4.30pm to 7.30pm.

Donor sessions will also be held at Brierley Hill Civic Hall on Sunday February 25 from 1.45pm to 3.30pm and 4.30pm to 7.30pm.
