CONSERVATIVE Gavin Williamson will remain in his role as aide to Prime Minister David Cameron after securing a second term as MP for South Staffordshire.

The Tory MP, who was first elected in 2010, claimed to be flabbergasted after increasing his majority by over 4,000 votes to clinch another victory in the traditionally blue rural constituency which covers Kinver and Stourton.

Mr Williamson polled 29, 478 - which was over a staggering 20,000 votes clear of his closest rival, Labour's Kevin McElduff who totalled 9,107.

As a result, he will continue as Mr Cameron's parliamentary private secretary and said: "I'm hoping to stay in this role for a fair bit longer."

Mr Williamson added: "I am incredibly humbled to get such a response back from the people of South Staffordshire. I dreamt of having such a good result without really expecting to get it - I certainly didn't expect to get the result I did but until it happens, you must never take anything for granted.

"I look forward to standing up for South Staffordshire and I will be fighting for better school funding and helping to make sure the greenbelt countryside is protected, which is something that means so much to my constituents."
