Black Country band Clutching At Straws are returning to Stourbridge as a three piece next month to launch their new single.

The alternative folk trio use a variety of instruments to build a full, layered sound, influenced by a diverse and eclectic range of artists of everything from the irony of bluegrass through to the drama of musical theatre.

They will showcase their new single ‘This Table Changes Everything’ at a release party in High Street’s Scary Canary The Venue, on February 5, from 8pm.

This Table Changes Everything is the band’s first release since the former quartet became a trio in January 2015.

Hailing from Stourbridge and Kinver, the band now includes James Baskett (bass, cello and vocals), Jake Mahal (percussion) and Thomas Simm (vocals, guitar and keys).

Stourbridge News:

James, who founded the band alongside Thomas and others in 2010, said: “Our live shows are brimming with energy and audience interaction and we invite audiences to share in stories that are bigger than themselves, keeping Clutching At Straws rooted in folk ideology.

“A Straws’ gig promises to be a highlight for the hardcore music fan as well as a treat for the layperson enjoying a pint in their local.”

They have been described by Folk Roots as “appealingly savvy self-penned lyrics based on real-life observation”, while Acoustic Magazine said they are “stomping with the best”.

Clutching At Straws will be supported at the gig, with tickets costing £6, by another local band ‘The Duke of Wollaston’.
