HEALTH workers in Staffordshire have given some financial support to a much-loved woodcraft folk group after a horrific arson attack burnt its hut to the ground.

Staff at the Staffordshire Unite In Health union branch handed over £500 to the High Acres Woodcraft Folk club to help fund a new hut.

Chairs, tables, toys and more than £20,000 worth of specialist woodcraft and outdoor equipment went up in flames when the vandals struck the Kinver-based camp in December.

But an online fundraising page was set up by members of the group to fund the building of a new base, which currently stands at more than £12,000.

Plans for the new hut are in place and it will be rebuilt in metal cladding during a working party between April 29 and May 2.

Su Lowe, Unite in Health Staffordshire chairman, said: “Many of our members are health visitors and school nurses and the work this group does with children moved the members to agree to donate £500 to their rebuild fund.

“The Woodcraft Folk share a love for equality and co-operation with our union and by engaging children to become active citizens in the spirit of internationalism.

“The group achieves so much and is a valuable asset that needs as much support as they can get.”

Su was invited to the camp to present a cheque to Bob Sandall, who has run the group for more than 48 years.

Bob said: “People have been so kind to us and we owe our new hut to everyone who has donated.”
