A FORMER railway goods building in Lye is to get a new lease of life as a waste transfer station.

The building, on Conyers Trading Estate, Station Drive, has most recently been used as a cardboard manufacturing plant but retains original features and is locally listed as a heritage asset.

At a meeting of Dudley’s development control committee on January 6 councillors gave the go-ahead for the application from Ecology Waste Solutions Ltd.

Committee members were told plastic, card, paper and glass would be delivered to the site which would be sorted into bails and dispatched to be processes elsewhere.

The new plant will create nine new full-time jobs and the company aims to sort 100,000 tonnes of waste per year.

Councillors were told during a public consultation on the plan concerns were raised about the risk of fire at the site but West Midlands Fire Service had no objections.

Council planning officers told councillors there would be little point in imposing a restriction on traffic movements to and from the site because there was no reliable or effective means of monitoring any restrictions.

Committee members voted to approve the application with conditions including a requirement for the operator to submit plans for fire prevention precautions and traffic management.

Committee member Cllr Colin Wilson said: “I’m all in favour of this one, it is satisfactory.”
