VANDALS have been caught on CCTV smashing the windows of a Stourbridge pub, which has been targeted for the second time in less than six months.

A man struck the Waggon and Horses at about 3.15am this morning (Monday, January 9), using a golf club to smash each of the outside windows of the Worcester Street pub.

The pub was targeted in the same way last August when its windows were smashed by someone using a metal bar.

Landlord Dan Wilkes and his wife Amy, who live above the pub, said they were awoken by the banging noises of the attack.

Dan told the News: “My wife heard the banging and I could hear something but was so fast asleep I wasn’t sure if it was just in my dream.

“But she woke me up and we ran downstairs into the pub to try and catch them, but they were long gone and had already ran off down the alley.

“We checked the CCTV and saw what had happened before calling the police.

“It’s a really hard one to take. Whoever has done it has done it in exactly the same way as last time, except this time it’s with a golf club and not a bar.

“Luckily it’s tough, double thickness glass and was not shattered all the way through, they just damaged the outside layer.

“We think we know who did it, but we don’t want to jump to any conclusions and we’re going to let the police carry out their investigation.”

Dan said his main concern now is to make sure the pub does not start getting a bad reputation due to the incident.

He said: “We had so many people here in the pub over Christmas and new year, with no trouble whatsoever and then something like this happens again.

“We’re such a quiet pub and never have any trouble. We have people who come in here time after time because we’re such a friendly and welcoming place.

“The main problem when things like this happen is that people will start thinking ‘that must be a rough place, better not go in there’, when really it’s just one idiot.

“We took a big hit the last time it happened, especially with the passing trade, as people who were going to come in would walk past because they would see the smashed windows.

“I just hope people will keep supporting us, and I’m sure they will because we have such a great bunch of customers here.

“It isn’t the first time it’s happened and I’m sure it won’t be that last, but we just hope the police can catch whoever did this and give them a big enough punishment to deter them from doing it again.”

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “Police were called to reports of criminal damage at the Waggon and Horses, in Worcester Street, Stourbridge, at around 3am this morning.

“Officers are viewing CCTV and anyone with information can call police on 101.”
