PUPILS at a two Stourbridge schools are celebrating after taking the top prizes at a Dudley schools maths competition.

The students at Belle Vue and Gig Mill Primary Schools competed against a number of other learners from across the borough in the Primary Dudley Inter School Mathematics Championship.

Sixty pupils fought it out in two age categories - seven to nine and nine to 11 – to see who would be victorious, with the Wordsley school taking the younger and the Norton-based school winning the older category.

David Porter, headteacher of Belle Vue, said: “We are delighted to win the Dudley Maths competition.

“The ability to calculate and manipulate number mentally and in written form is one we work hard as a school to develop in our pupils.

“The children involved were not only a credit to the school and the teachers but also themselves.”

Angela Hannaway, headteacher of Gig Mill Primary School, said: “The children have displayed great problem solving skills and teamwork.

“We are all really proud of their enthusiasm and love for maths, as well as their achievements.

“I am also very proud of our staff team who have nurtured the pupils’ talents.”

The new Mayor of Dudley, Councillor Steve Waltho, was on hand to present the winning prizes which were donated by local businesses.

Leader of Dudley Council, Councillor Pete Lowe, said: “It’s fantastic that these young students are getting a chance to showcase their considerable talents amongst their peers.”
