STOURBRIDGE martial arts instructors hope to rope in as many people as possible to an outdoor challenge in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Alex Reason, an instructor at Dan Woodruff's Academy Martial Arts in Bagley Street, Stambermill, has organised the 'battle cancer - battle rope challenge' event which will take place from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday July 18 in Mary Stevens Park.

Alex, the academy's chief instructor, decided to organise the event - which will see students from the academy trying to keep two 'battle ropes' moving for two hours - to pull in cash for Macmillan, having lost two family members to cancer.

The 32-year-old from Stourbridge said: "This event is to raise awareness of what this amazing organisation does for people in their darkest hours.

"I chose 'battle ropes' as they are ridiculously hard. Unfortunately I won't be able to join in as I have broken my collar bone and I'm due for an operation on Tuesday."

Academy owner Dan Woodruff said: "We've extended an invite to all 275 of our students and their families to come down and take part.

"Our objective is to try and keep two ‘battle ropes’ going for two hours.

"These are the big thick ropes and to keep them moving for a minute is quite tiring, so to keep them moving for two hours should be quite a challenge."

Online donations ahead of the event have already added up to £190 so it is hoped the challenge could pull in between £300 and £500 for the charity.
